I'm using jaws 10 and wondering if it still works with the newest windows live, if not. does anyone have any other programs they use in place of windows live messenger? just curious. though i hardly use it anymore, i still do from time to time so hope it's not a total loss.

looking forward to your imput

dragon.

i'm not sure of other versions but jaws 13 supports it so far. Some like miranda but i don't like it at all. Think it was a very bad move on microsoft's part to force updrades again like this, they're just showing all they care about is themselves, not the people using their stuff.

it works for you, but it doesn't work with jaws 10.

for the time till something else happens i'm using instantbird. which is, basically like maranda. kind of blurp but hey it's all i can do for now.

though i'm mainly on skype anyway

Microsoft does care, but they also expect people to upgrade the supporting software. It is just to difficult to keep supporting old software, so this is why it works with Jaws 13. You could run the demo when you want to use Windows live, or like suggested try Skype. It works like Windows live, you just need to have your friends get it. AIM is also good.

i saw the notification to upgrade this morning.

oh joy... yet another upgrade- though on the plus side i hope this upgrade allows you to set your status because with the last version you were stuck with what you had on the old messenger before it was upgraded. unless of course you logged in to a computer with old messenger and changed the status that way

for messengers i use skype alot, aim, sometimes and msn, well, sometimes. but as i said in post 3 i got instantbird, which is like maranda so you can have multiple messengers on one thing. i still prefer skype though.

windows live doesn't work even with jaws 13. it's quite unresponsive

Sorry to beg the differents. Windows Live work beautifully with Jaws 11 through 13. I am running 13 and the latest version.
You have to set it up correctly, and that might even help with Jaws 10 and the newest Windows Live. I have not tried it.

Oh also changing you status has been well changed. You don't have to log on to an old computer to do so.
If anyone wishes to know how to make anything happen let me know.

I ask a good friend of mine if she knew of anyone having issues or even having to update and this was what she says is working. I haven’t had to do this because I updated on 3/8 it says, so I haven’t been asked for any new yet.
This assumes you are running Windows 7 or Vista. She says it is updating on XP as well, but I don’t have an XP computer to look at to see if you can find these settings. I don’t remember if XP has this, it has been a while since I’ve did anything with XP. Okay the fix, already! Lol
Run MSNSGR in compatibility mode.
In Windows 7 go to programs, Windows Live Messenger, hit applications and go to properties. Under Properties shift tab over to compatibility check that box and select Windows 7. Tab to okay.
My friends say this might not work and suggest you do it under program files under your C drive.
Go to computer, Open the C drive and arrow to program files, open that go down to Windows Live, open that go to messenger, open that and find the MSNSGR file, than repeat the above steps.
If you just use the above steps under properties soon is you click it on instead of shift tab over simply hit tab until you find open program location. It takes you to the C drive location.
Now others might have messenger installed on another drive, but I assume if you do you’ll know how to get to it.
Someone let me know if this helped?

The new Windows live is basically the same. I'm using Jaws 12 and have no problems with it

I've been trying to figure out the new update to messenger. It works, as in I can start conversations, but its not very responsive. For example, I can arrow down the contact list, but I can't arrow up the contact list. If I arrow too far, I have to start over again entirely.
I tried the solution above, but there was a problem. IN the list of OS's you can choose from to run it with, there is no windows seven. Unless windows seven has another name I'm not familiar with. It has eleven choices, the highest is windows vista service pack 2. I've never heard windwos seven refered to as that. Suggestions?

To gix that arrowing issue in the main window tab until you hear layout hit inter so that is changes to compact view.
I have a list of settings for messenger. If anyone wishes to know them let me know and I'll post it.

I dicided to post them anyway. I thought about, if you say it works prove it. Lol
Messenger needs to be setup to work properly and sometimes will change the layout view.
When you first install it you get a choice of social or MSN. You’ll want to choose MSN.
Next set the view. Tab until you find toggle layout button. It toggles between full and compact view. The compact view work best for chat and the full view for reading your today pages and other stuff that are on the messenger main page. Moving from place to place needs compact view.
Next go to the options and there are settings that make it work best. To get to settings you use alt T then arrow up once to options.
Hit the inter key and you are in the personal window. Tab and shift tab work this section. To move to the sections tab to say personal than use the arrow keys to move to the sections. When you get to the one you want tab or shift tab to make changes.
Here is how mine is set.
Personal doesn’t matter. You can set these as you like.
Sign in. The only setting that matters for ease of use is to check the box to show the main window when you sign in.
Contacts. You’ll want to set it for medium or small icons. Jaws can not read large icons for some reason. I also like to check the tab bar the other settings are as you like.
Messages. Uncheck the tab browsing and check to show expanded footer in the conversation window.
After these setting all other options are up to you. These have no effect on the screen readers seeing messages and such.
Last check your Jaws settings by using insert V to see what you like.
Let me know if this works? If not I have other suggestions.

Thanks, this is really helpful information. To some blind people I know, the words windows live messenger are taboo, and if you don't use anything other than the great, wonderful and awesome Miranda you are considered uncool and are cast out. I've used miranda and think it works well for what it does, but the main problem I have with it is even though I have it set to show me as away if I leave the computer after 5 minutes it doesn't. I've woken up to messages asking me what in the blue hell i'm doing up and online at 4 AM? I haven't been, but since i constantly show as being online, I get those messages. I never remember to change my status manually, because windows live does it for me after a set number of minutes. I can also tell when someone is a miranda user by their status message. Things like, doing whatever I do since 9:16 PM on June 23 2012. I don't really care about when they left or how long they've been online, but they like to show that stuff for whatever reason. Oh well it's all a matter of preference and the people who make fun of windows live would do well to remember that.

Post 18 by forereel (Just posting.) on Saturday, 23-Jun-2012 21:32:56

I don't use Miranda only for the reason it can be worked on by anyone, or is open source. Open source is good, but requires control of what gets in the mix, and Miranda doesn't seem to have any control setup.
Its not fair, but one mean person gets in and creates a part that also has a virus we all suffer.
Now status changes are WLM are simple. You tab to say something new and type what you want in that box. That is not exactly what it says, but close. There is a key stroke to get there as well. I'll post it.
That status follows you where ever you log on.

Post 19 by forereel (Just posting.) on Saturday, 23-Jun-2012 21:42:56

Control plus N and it says share something new. You can type your status there.
Now online offline that sort of thing you press the alt key and arrow down if you aren't using the messenger plus client. Messenger plus adds other features, such as being able to sign on to 2 different accounts at once.
I use this feature to know when I have new email, because I have 2 email addresses. The messenger plus has many other features as well.

no problems here either, I got this computer with a fairly new version and got it on both runs 12 and I have no problems yet though I much prefer the old version I won't moan, this one works dandy with jaws 12. it always has from day one, well not on my other computer but, that was because it was buggy so I restarted it, and it works like a charm, which is finer than fine.

Yes on some systems it seems to just work, but that is most likely the way the system was or is setup. On others some changing does the trick.
Historically MSN or Windows Live messenger has gone through its difficult accessibility fazes, but currently Microsoft has been doing a good job keeping it together. AOL or AIM is the best atkeeping the messenger client accessible in my opinion.
I suppose I like MSN, because that is where my mail is.
